Abstract
851,174. Universal joints. BERRIDGE & CO. Ltd., I. L., and HOLLAND, J. R. Jan. 31, 1958 [Oct. 31, 1956; July 1, 1957], Nos. 33295/56 and 20680/57.. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXV] In a Hooke's. joint having trunnion pins carried in rubber bushings 1 the pins can turn freely relaytive to shaft fork arms A in bearing bushes 9 arranged inside or outside the rubber bushings, and the shafts are centred on each other. In Fig. 3, the centring means comprises part spherical pads 15 engaging complementary pads 13 carried by the cross S and urged together by spring or rubber washers 18 arranged as shown, or between the pads 13 and the cross S. In Fig. 1 (Provisional, not shown) the centring means comprises concave thrust pads engaging the ends of the trunnion pins and carried in the fork arms or the pins may have caps of bearing material. Such means may also be used in addition to that shown in Fig. 3. The rubber bushings are bonded to inner and outer metal sleeves and are supported in the shaft fork arms in screwed cups 4 which. maybe retained by grub screws. For the various bearing surfaces the following materials may be used: impregnated metal, oil-impregnated sintered metal, a linear polyamide such as nylon, polytetrafluorethylene, plastic-faced metal, plastic, steel, cast iron, phosphor bronze.
