Abstract
904,170. Universal Joints. METALASTIK Ltd. April 22, 1959 [Nov. 19, 1958], No. 37290/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXV] In a Hooke's type universal joint each arm 13 of the spider 11 is mounted in a resilient bush 15 in a cup-shaped housing 14, which housings are retained by a circlip 17 in apertures in the forked ends of the coupled shafts 6, 9. The arms 13 may be coned, as shown, or cylindrical, and the ends of the arms may have part-spherical heads, the bushes 15 and housings 14 being correspondingly shaped in each case. Recesses 19 in the ends of the bushes 15 and holes 20 in the housings 14 aligned with the recesses permit axial compression of the bushes which may be adjusted by introducing shim between the circlips and forks, without overstraining the ends of the housings. The bushes 15 may, as shown, be a single member or may comprise a separate end part 18 and side part 18a. The bushes 15 may be bonded to the arms 13 or may be lined with a bearing cup of polytetrafluoroethylene or polytrichlorofluoroethylene in which the arms are free to turn.
