Abstract

604,383. Universal joints. STEVENS, A. H. (Thompson Products, Inc.). Oct. 15, 1945, No. 26877. [Class 65 (ii)] A joint comprises a socket 11 having a part-spherical bearing surface, a stud member 17 having a bearing surface converging in the same general direction as the aforesaid surface, a bushing unit 22 having a resilient member 25 interposed between a part-spherical outer bearing shell 23 seated in the socket and an inner bearing shell 24 in which the stud is rotatably seated, and a closure plate 15 adapted to co-operate with the stud to maintain the parts in bearing engagement. The shells may be made of self-lubricating metal or of fabric and are vulcanized to the rubber ring 25. As shown, a rounded boss 20 is formed under a part-spherical stud-head 18 and seats in a depression in the closure plate. In a modification the stud-head is ball-shaped and seats within a pair of bushing units. In a further modification the stud-head is formed by a part-spherical ring made of metal or of plastic material and press-fitted over a cylindrical portion of the stud. In yet a further modification the end of the stud flares outwardly and seats rotatably in a ring which is either secured to the inner shell or replaces the latter. Passages may be formed through the stud for lubricating the inner shell.
