Abstract

683,402. Ball-and-socket joints. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Dec. 1, 1949 [July 30, 1949], No. 30849/49. Class 65 (ii) A pivotal joint comprises a housing 11, a bearing ring 12 tiltable in the housing, a stud 13 extending through the bearing ring, ball bearings 14 disposed between concave races 12c, 13c on the bearing ring and stud respectively, the contour of the races being flatter than the surface of the balls, and means urging the stud towards the bearing ring to maintain the parts in assembled relation. The bearing ring has a part-spherical outer surface and the stud has a rounded end seated on a plate 15, a compression spring 16 being interposed between the latter and a closure plate 17. It is stated that the construction, by accommodating the balls at different levels, enables the parts to be maintained in the same assembled relationship despite any variation in the sizes of the parts.
