Abstract
694,136. Pivotal joints. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Feb. 8, 1951 [Aug. 16, 1950], No. 3091/51. Class 65 (ii) A pivotal joint comprises a socket 10, a bearing member 25 movably housed in the socket, a separate insert 18 fixedly retained in the socket, the insert having a hardened surface for accommodating movement of the bearing member and an end portion 20a within the socket forming an abutment, a closure member 21 for the socket seated against the abutment, and a spring 43 seated on the closure member for urging the bearing member into contact with the hardened surface. The end portion 20a is knurled to grip the socket. The bearing member has a hardened, spherical bearing surface. A stud 33 is rotatably disposed in the bearing member and has a rounded head 34 seated in a free, cupshaped member 41 against which the spring acts. The stud rotates on ball bearings 32 disposed between a hardened sheet metal race 31 at the base of the bearing member and a hardened race 39 formed on the stud adjacent its head. Spiral lubricant grooves 29 are formed in the spherical surface of the bearing member and a lubricator 45 is fitted to the socket.
