Abstract
484,058. Making universal joints. MEYER, L. W. (Thompson Products, Inc.) Sept. 3, 1937, No. 24065. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXV] Forging-punches.-A method of making a universal joint, such as a tie-rod joint, having a headed stud member freely rotatable and tiltable in a housing, includes the steps of providing in the housing a bearing wall of soft metal such as Woods metal or the alloy known under the Registered Trade Mark " Babbitt." which materials may be impregnated with graphite or other lubricant, and pressing the stud head into the wall to form a bearing surface for itself thereon. A ring 16 of soft bearing metal having parallel or inclined walls is pressed into a housing 10 by a tool 23, a tapered portion 22 on which shapes the inner surface of the ring 16. Excess metal is forced out through the aperture 14. The stud 25, Fig. 5, is then forced in by a tool 28, the spherical surface 26 deforming the ring 16 to form its own bearing surface. In a modification, a pair of opposite bearing surfaces separated by recesses 47, 48 are formed by a tool 40 having projections 43, 44, the stud being pressed in to deform the bearing surfaces as in Fig. 5. In the assembled joint, a spherical projection 27 on the stud engages a retainer member 34 which is held in engagement therewith by a spring 35.
