Abstract
428,649. Universal joints. DEHN, F. B., 103, Kingsway, London.-(Thompson Products, Inc. ; 7781, Conant Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) June 8, 1934, No. 17084. [Class 65 (ii)] A universal joint comprises a housing 10, a stud 12 and a seating element 17 between the stud and the housing, the seating 17 and housing 10 having partspherical bearing surfaces 16 and the seating 17 and stud 12 having part-spherical bearing surfaces 22 and also other bearing surfaces 23 which serve to transmit tilting of the stud to the seating 17 ; rotation of the seating 17 in the housing is prevented by a set-screw 49 engaging a groove in the seating, so that tilting of the stud produces movement only at the surfaces 16 and rotation of the stud on its axis produces movement only at surfaces 22 and 23. The parts are held in engagement, and pressed together to take up wear, by a spring 57 bearing on a closing plate 33 in the bottom of the housing 10 and carrying a part-spherical button 54 bearing in a corresponding depression in the end of the stud. In a modification, the button 54 is replaced by a plate having a depression to fit a part-spherical protuberance on the end of the stud. The inner surface of the member 17 may be grooved for lubrication. Specification 424,805 is referred to.
