Abstract

507,025. Universal joints. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Feb. 8, 1938, No. 3919. Convention date, Feb. 8, 1937. [Class 65 (ii)] A universal joint comprises a cup-shaped element 11 to which is bolted a joint housing member 15 having a recess 19 and a segmental spherical bearing wall 20 on which are seated two hollow hemispherical bearing caps 27, 28 enclosing the head 40 of a stud member 35. The stud member 35 has a cylindrical shank portion 39 on which is mounted a ring member 41. Spring washers 45, 46 acting between the base 44 of the stud head 40 and the rim 43 of the ring member 41 tend to keep the caps 27, 28 apart so that the stud 35 may rotate freely on its own axis. The caps 27, 28 are cut away at 32a to form an opening which cooperates with the shank 39 so that the cap members move with the stud during tilting movements, and at 32 to prevent the edges binding on the stud head 40 or bearing wall 20. Tho stud is held in the housing 15 by an annular member 24 which is held in place by peening over the rim 25. The bolt 17 and housing 15 are bored at 21 whereby the bearing surfaces may be readily lubricated.
