Abstract
863,484. Piston and connecting-rod assemblies. MAHLE-WERK G.m.b.H. May 2, 1957 [July 5, 1956], No. 14003/57. Class 122 (1). In a pressure-cast light alloy piston and connecting rod assembly, the small end 7 of the connecting rod 8 is either cylindrical or part spherical and has a bearing surface which is journalled in a correspondingly shaped bearing surface of bearing metal in a member serving as a reinforcing rib 2 inside the piston 1, the bearing surfaces of the rod and rib making contact over more than 180 degrees of arc. Alternatively, a moulded member 10, Fig. 5, secured by a screw 11, may encircle the rod end 7. When the bearing surfaces are part spherical, the end of the rod is inserted within a bush 4, Fig. 7, and turned through 90 degrees to engage the bush, the rod end being secured by a circlip 18. If the bearing surfaces are cylindrical, the rod end is located by a lip formed at one side of the bush, the circlip being held in a groove at the other, open, side of the bush.
