Abstract

852,139. Ball-and-socket joints. ENGINEERING PRODUCTIONS (CLEVEDON) Ltd. Nov. 7, 1958 [Nov. 8, 1957], No. 34922/57. Class 65(2). The socket, which is internally shaped to fit closely around substantially the whole working surface of the ball and has one end closed and the other end formed with a mouth of smaller diameter than the ball, is made of synthetic plastic material which is sufficiently resilient to enable the mouth to be stretched to permit entry of the ball and is inserted into an outer supporting housing after entry of the ball. The housing also prevents the expansion of the mouth which would be necessary to withdraw the ball. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the housing 1 is formed integrally in a stub axle carrier 2 and the socket 5 is retained therein by a ring 6 or a circlip. In a modification, Fig. 3, the housing comprises an outer part 1c which is screwed on to an internally dished extension-lb of the carrier 2 and is secured thereon by a tab washer 9, and in a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the housing comprises an externally screw-threaded cup-shaped part which is screwed into an extension of the carrier 2. Alternatively the housing is formed of two outwardly flanged cups, bolted together with the flanges abutting, or may be provided by an aperture in one end of a rod forming part of a steering assembly. In any embodiment a small recess may be formed around the inside of the housing to accommodate excess material of the socket if the latter is preloaded. The socket may be formed in more than one piece. A dust excluder 8 is provided.
