Abstract
906,069. Universal joints &c. GIRLING Ltd. Nov. 22, 1960 [Nov. 26, 1959], No. 40149/59. Class 80 (2). A casing for a universal joint comprises interengaging part-spherical shaft-mounted shells 10, 14 one 14 of which extends more than a hemisphere and at least one of which is made of resilient material such as rubber or plastic so that it can be deformed to fit into or on to the other shell. As shown the shell 10 is a rigid metal or nylon hemisphere clipped at 13 to the shaft 12 and engaging under a resilient rubber three-quarter sphere 14 attached to the other shaft 16, the resilient member having a seal e.g. double lips 18, 19, Fig. 2, engaging the rigid member. The rubber shell 14 has strengthening ribs 17, 21, and a lubricant part 20, and may be outwardly pressed by a garter spring. The rigid shell 10 may be in two concentric sections enclosing the resilient shell 14 between them.
