753,234. Ball joints. ENGINEERING PRODUCTIONS (CLEVEDON), Ltd. Oct. 7, 1954 [Oct. 7, 1953; July 12, 1954], Nos. 27578/53 and 20375/54. Class 65 (2). In a ball joint in which part of the socket is in the form of a separate member 21 secured in a housing 13, a plug 27 screwed into the housing abuts directly against the member 21, to press the latter adjustably against the ball 20, and a volute spring 34 is disposed in an annular recess in the plug to eliminate rattle and keep the socket member against the ball if wear takes place. In the form shown, the upper part of the socket is formed by a suitable surface 16 of the housing, and the opening through which the ball stud projects is sealed against the entry of dirt and loss of lubricant by a member 35. The plug 27 is fixed in its adjusted position by peening over parts 29 of the edge of the housing opening into a diametral slot 23 in the plug; the peening may be removed if readjustment is required. The surface of the ball and the part-spherical surface 16 of the housing are hardened; the member 21, or its part-spherical surface only, is also hardened. Lubricant nipples may be provided in the plug and/or the housing.
