Abstract

737,811. Ball joints. WRIGHT, H. CLAYTON -. Feb. 17, 1954 [Feb. 24, 1953; July 23, 1953], Nos. 5077/53 and 20423/53. Class 65(2). A universal joint of the type used in vehicle steering- gear comprises a housing 10, a stud 13 with a partspherical portion bearing in a ring 20 of moulded plastic material in the housing, the ring having one or more projecting parts adapted to engage in a recess or recesses in the housing to prevent its movement therein, and resilient means in the housing acting on the stud to hold it in bearing engagement with the ring. In the form shown, the housing has a lip against which the ring 20 bears, the aperture through which the stud 13 passes having recesses 23 in its edge to receive upward projections 22 on the ring, and the resilient means comprises a rubber block 28 seated on a plate 29, which closes the housing, and provided with a bearing plate 27 to receive a partspherical boss 17 on the end of the stud. The aperture in the housing through which the stud passes is elongated to allow greater angular movement of the stud in one plane than in a plane at right angles to that plane. Dirt is excluded by slidably engaging cups 31, 32. The bearing ring 20 and plate 27 and the cups 31, 32 are preferably made of nylon. In modifications the projections 22 on the ring 20 may be replaced by ribs on its periphery engaging grooves in the housing or, according to the second Provisional Specification, by radial projections engaging holes in the housing. The plate 29 may be replaced by a plug screwed into the housing to permit adjustment of the pressure on the bearing surfaces.
