Abstract

841,729. Cutting by fusion. WHESSOE Ltd. Jan. 6, 1959 [Jan. 10, 1958], No. 1005/58. Class 83(4). The edge of a plate 6 is prepared for welding by forming a groove 7 in the edge of the plate 6 and using an oxygen cutting-nozzle 8 to make a cut 9 extending from one face of the plate 6 into the groove 7, while a nozzle 13 directs a stream of gas, e.g. air, along the groove to intersect the path of the cutting jet so removing slag and excess oxygen. The cutting-nozzle. 8 and air nozzle 13 are mounted on a movable support 14 which may also carry a grouping nozzle to form the groove 7. The gouging and air nozzles are directed forwardly and rearwardly, respectively.
