Abstract

1453100 Cutting by fusion VSES NI PROEKTNOKONSTRUKT I TEKH INST ELEKTROSVAROCH OBORUDOVANIA 21 June 1974 27713/74 Heading B3V [Also in Divisions H3-H5] A transferred arc plasma torch, in which the same gas both cools the nozzle and forms the plasma, has a non-consumbable electrode 3 consisting of an insert 4 (hafnium or an alloy thereof) in a holder 5 (copper or an alloy thereof) supported centrally in a nozzle 7 by an insulator 6, the nozzle and electrode defining a chamber 9 divided into two parts by a gas permeable partition 13, one part having an inlet for the cooling and plasma forming gas (oxygen or air) and both parts having outlets 8, 10. A shield 16 may surround the nozzle and part of the insulator 6 and then conducts cooling gas from outlets 10 around the nozzle to outlets 17. The electrode may have a hollow holder which admits the cooling and plasma forming gas to chamber 9 via apertures 19. The permeable partition 13 is either porous or pierced by through holes. Its function is to divide the gas flow such that more gas flows through the cooling apertures than through the plasma aperture 8. The ratio of resistance to flow between the partition 13, aperture 8 and apertures 10 lies between 1 : 2 : 12 and 1 : 3À5 : 20. The Fig. 1 embodiment is operated with an arc struck between insert 4 and workpiece 2. The Fig. 3 embodiment has an arc struck first between electrode 3 and copper nozzle 7 which is subsequently transferred to a workpiece. The torch is said to be portable and to find use in cutting of sheet metals, manual or mechanical fettling of castings and cleaning of rolled products.
