Abstract

705,011. Discharge apparatus; treating gases with discharges. VYZKUMMY USTAV TEZKEHO STROJIRENSTVI and HOUST, F. March 24, 1952 [March 23, 1951], No. 7528/52. Class 39(1) [Also in Group XI] An apparatus for decomposing a gas, e.g. methane into soot and acetylene gas, by an electric are 3, comprises two hollow annular, liquid-cooled electrodes 1. 2, and two liquid-cooled electric coils 4, 5, arranged axially therewith at the ends of two electrode holders 8, 9, and means for admitting gas through at least the lower holder 9, the electric field produced by the coils 4, 5 causing rotary motion of the arc 3. The gas enters at 27 flowing axially of the electrodes through a nozzle 19 and then radially at right angles to the axis of the arc 3, products of decomposition escaping at 25 from a casing 20 enclosing the electrodes. To strike the arc an insulated rod 15 is depressed until an auxiliary electrode 14 contacts the nozzle 19 to close an electric circuit from terminal 6 to terminal 7, electrodes 1, 2 being connected to their respective coils. The height of a lid 21 on the casing 20 is adjustable at 22, 23 to vary the spacing of electrodes 1, 2. Cooling liquid is lead off at 12, 13. The coils 4, 5 may be enclosed in a casing of ferromagnetic material, and the electrode 14 may be formed with ribs which both guide it in the holder 8 and provide passages for the gas to be decomposed, If desired separate electric coils may be used for the electric field, either alone or in conjunction with the coils 4, 5.
