Abstract

[Also in Group XXII] An electric arc cutting device comprises a housing 8 having a shielding nozzle 1 with a replaceable insert 5 defining a passage 6 about a non-consumable electrode 7 supported within the housing with its tip extending into or through the nozzle, connections 12 for supplying a shielding gas to flow around the electrode and through the passage, and a secondary electrode 5 for subjecting the shielding gas to ionisation. The electrode 7 which may be of tungsten is carried by a support 11 made of an oxide or oxides of aluminium, zirconium, silicon or magnesium and having passage 12 for the shielding gas which may be argon, nitrogen or hydrogen. The nozzle 1 has a cooling chamber 2 and may be made of carbon, carborundum, metal, a ceramic material or of ceramic and metal; it has a replaceable insert 5 of electrographite which constitutes the secondary electrode. The electrode 7 and workpiece 14, Fig. 2, are connected to a direct or alternating current source 13 and the secondary electrode 5 is connected to a high frequency current source 15 such as a spark generator through a conductor 4 which is also a coolant discharge pipe. This high frequency source may be switched off when the cutting arc has been established.
