Abstract

860,613. Arc torches. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. April 1, 1957 [April 10, 1956], No. 10486/57. Addition to 845,410. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group XXII]. In a constricted arc torch in which a stream of gas and an arc between a non-consumable electrode 10 and a workpiece 14 are passed through a narrow passage in a nozzle 12, as described in the parent Specification the arc flame is interrupted by a shutter 38 interposed between the passage and the workpiece. The arc flame is re-established by a pilot arc between the nozzle 12 and the electrode 10. The shutters may be cardboard or aluminium and are rotated by an electric motor 42. The torch is particularly applicable to spot-welding An external gas shield may be provided.
