Abstract

979,353. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Feb. 5, 1963 [Feb. 9, 1962], No. 5105/62. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H5] Gas-shielded electric arc equipment includes one or more unconsumable main electrodes 1 and an auxiliary electrode 5 mounted adjacent to and capable of moving into contact with main electrode 1 or one of the main electrodes to strike an auxiliary arc. As shown, electrode 5 is pivoted about a point 6. Electrode 1 is connected to one pole of a supply unit 2, the other pole being connected through control gear 4 to the workpiece 3 and through switch 8 and variable resistor 7 to electrode 5. Electrodes 1 and 5 are preferably made of the same material but may be different and if for example electrode 1 is of thoriated tungsten, electrode 5 may be of plain tungsten. Electrode 5 may be adjusted manually or automatically. After the auxiliary arc has struck, the shielding gas is ionized allowing the main arc to strike. Switch 8 may be opened or electrode 5 moved further from electrode 1 to intercept the auxiliary arc and cause the arc to transfer. According to the Provisional Specification there may be two or more auxiliary electrodes or the auxiliary electrode may take the form of a ring.
