1377987 Welding and cutting by fusion TBILISSKOE OTDELENIE VSESOJUZNOGO NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKOGO PROEKTNO - KONSTRUKTORSKOGO INSTITUTA ELEKTROSVAROCHNOGO OBORUDOVANIA 16 Dec 1971 58409/71 Headings B3R and B3V [Also in Division H5] In a plasma arc torch, e.g. for cutting or welding metals, comprising two arc-forming nozzles 6, 7 located in tandem in front of a cathode 1 and between which is a chamber 8 for delivering water for stabilizing the arc struck between the cathode 1 and the workpiece (not shown), atubular nozzle 5 surrounds the cathode 1 and a tangential channel 3 is provided for the delivery of cooling water to it, the end of the nozzle 5 being flush with the surface of nozzle 6 or within it, Fig. 2 (not shown), and the outer periphery of said end being located within the periphery of the passage through nozzle 6. The nozzle 5 is shaped so that cooling water from chamber 4 spreads over it and passes into gap 11 and via water collector 12 to outlet channel 13. Stabilizing water is delivered tangentially into chamber 8 via channels 10, see also Fig. 3 (not shown), and passes as a thin film through the orifices of nozzles 6 and 7. Part of this water becomes steam which, dissociating and ionizing, contributes to the formation of plasma.
