Abstract
1395938 Cutting and welding by fusion MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 16 Aug 1972 [16 Aug 1971] 38203/72 Headings B3R and B3V [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for plasma welding and cutting comprises a plasma torch 11 and a D.C. power source 10 having its negative pole 23 connected to the torch electrode 21 and its positive pole 24 connected to a branched conductor 25 the first branch 26 being connected to the torch nozzle 18 to provide a pilot arc 27 and the second branch 28 being connected to the workpiece 29 to provide a main arc 30 to the electrode, the first branch including a resistance 31 to limit the pilot arc current and a conductor 32 which is adapted to bridge the resistance 31 at the moment of striking the main arc whereby at the moment of striking the main arc the resistance of the current path for the pilot arc is lower than that for the main arc. The conductor 32 includes a switch contact 33 adapted to be opened by a time delay relay 34 in the main arc path 28. A high frequency igniter 35 is provided to initiate the pilot arc.
