Abstract
1400051 Welding by fusion MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 15 Sept 1972 [16 Sept 1971] 42902/72 Heading B3R In submerged-arc welding, three continuously fed electrodes 1, 2, 3 are serially disposed in the line of the weld and form and are consumed in arcs, the leading electrode 1 being connected, together with the workpiece 5, to a D.C. source 14, and the middle and trailing electrodes 2, 3 being connected, together with the workpiece, to A.C. sources, and two additional, D.C. connected, electrodes 18, 19 are continuously fed into, so as to be in continuous short-circuit with, the molten pool in the region of the arc of the middle electrode 2, said additional electrodes 18, 19 being consumed without forming arcs, being melted by resistance heating and by heat from the middle electrode arc. The leading electrode 1 serves to produce the desired penetration shape, the electrodes 2, 18, 19 to deposit material, and the hailing electrode 3 (which is inclined) to finish and widen the seam. The additional electrodes 18, 19 are arranged with opposite polarities so as not to produce substantial magnetic disturbances, being either connected to separate D.C. sources with low open circuit voltage or, as shown, close circuit connected in series with the workpiece and a D.C. source 24. The leading and trailing electrodes 1, 3 should be separated from the middle electrode 2 by sufficient distance to avoid magnetic disturbances. The additionl electrodes 18, 19 may be disposed respectively upstream and downstream or both upstream of the middle electrode 2. As shown, the two A.C. sources for the electrodes 2, 3 are the outputs of two transformers 16, 17 arranged in a Scott connection to a three-phase supply 15. To provide adequate resistance heating of the additional electrodes 18, 19, the latter are fed through contact tube extensions 25, 26 of heatresistant, electrically non-conducting material, e.g. ceramic. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,151,873.
