Abstract

PURPOSE: To make possible the submerged arc welding of high quality and high performance by applying direct current to the 1st electrode at the foremost end in the welding advance direction of the four electrodes which are disposed in tandem and alternating current to the backward 2nd, 3rd and 4th electrodes and making the 2nd and 4th electrodes into in-phase and deviating the phase of the 3rd electrode 120° from said phase.
CONSTITUTION: The works W deing the open pipes butted at their edge parts are horizontally disposed. The 1stW4th electrodes 1W4 are fixed and disposed subsequently in the welding direction above the works and the works are advanced and welded in the direction opposite from the arrow. Desirable spacing distances and respective angles of the four electrodes are l12, l23, l34; 20mm, θ1; 0°, θ2; 5°, θ3; 10°, Q4; 20°. The positive electrode of a DC electric power source 5 is connected to the electrode 1 and its negative electrode to the works. AC feeders 6 of 3 phases are so connected by way of a transformer 7 that the welding current of the electrode 2 and electrode 4 becomes of in-phase and this welding current and the welding current of the electrode 3 deviate in phase by 120°.
