[Also in Division H5] A system for arc working a metal workpiece, using a plasma jet torch which has a nozzle electrode through which a high velocity plasma flame flows towards the workpiece from a central electrode disposed upstream of the outlet nozzle electrode, has the nozzle electrode and the central electrode connected to a direct current power source for operation in the non- transferred mode, and the nozzle electrode maintained at substantially the same potential as the workpiece, so that the torch automatically changes over to operation in a semi-transferred mode when the nozzle electrode is brought close to the workpiece .The use in accordance with the above system of a plasma jet torch with a tungsten central electrode and a copper nozzle using high-frequency spark injection to establish the are between the central electrode and the nozzle is described. The system may be applied to metal working processes which require a heating and/or melting operation, such as welding, gouging, localized surface heating, cutting &c.
