In a flame cutting machine having a plurality of cutting nozzles 10, 11, 12, a guard 5 is provided between adjacent nozzles to minimize fouling of the nozzle tips by oxide particles. A machine for preparing plate edges for welding has three nozzles to the centre one, 10, of which is attached a guard 5 of metal or ceramic. The guard may be air or water cooled.
