Abstract

743,250. Machinery guards. BRITON BRUSH CO., Ltd., and MARWOOD, G. H. Oct. 9, 1953 [Oct. 9, 1952], No. 25313/52. Class 80(4) A cup-shaped guard 17 for the cutter 15 of a spindle moulder is carried by a parallel linkage 20, 21, so as to be gravitybiased into guarding position, and is automatically raised on approach of a workpiece by the armature 23 of an electromagnet which is energized on depression of a push-button 25 arranged in the path of the cramp holding the workpiece. The cutter spindle has a collar 16 for co-operation with a steel template on the cramp. In a modification the electromagnet is controlled by a photo-electric cell so that on interruption of a light beam the guard is raised. In a further modification the electromagnet is located above the work table. Where a machine has two oppositely-rotating spindles there may be a single guard for both spindles or separate guards operated by individual buttons and electromagnets. The guard means is applicable to other machines having a continuously-running tool.
