A coil vibration detector is associated with the cutting tool of a machine during operation, whereby excessive vibration produced by wear at the cutting edge produces an increased output from the detector which, after amplification and rectification, operates a thyratron or other relay to stop the machine and energize an alarm circuit and means for automatically replacing the worn tool or sharpening it. The apparatus may be associated with a machine automatically controlled from a coded record, and the new or sharpened tool is automatically repositioned relative to the work-piece.
