A method of removing a surface portion of a metal bar comprises moving the bar through a shaving tool while providing additional relative movement between the tool and work. The additional movement may consist of rotation of the tool or of oscillation or vibration of the tool. The work may be advanced at slow speeds of 5 to 35 feet per minute and may be surface-hardened before entering the cutting die. Specifications 908,062, 908,063 and 908,065 also are referred to.
