Abstract

908,062. Broaching; making rods, tubes and wires. SALLE STEEL CO. Oct. 20, 1958 [Oct. 22, 1957], No. 33675/60. Divided out of 908,061. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (3). In a method of removing the surface of an elongate bar &c. by a continuous cold-finishing operation by a shaving tool, the surface of the work ahead of the tool is hardened by diffusion to a depth at least equal to the depth of cut. The tool may be made of H.S. steel, a cemented carbide, or a ceramic. It may cut a polygonal shape or a keyway in the outer or inner surface of the work. In the latter case, the tool is hollow for the disposal of chips. The diffusion process may utilize carbon, nickel, chromium or tungsten, and a gas or liquid may be introduced adjacent the cutting edge to react with the freshly cut metal to harden it by diffusion transfer. The work may be subsequently drawn, extruded or rolled. A lubricant may be supplied between the shaving tool and the reduction die. The work may be aligned with the tool by a roller guide, a slide or a die. Specifications 908,063, 908,064 and 908,065 also are referred to.
