Abstract
840,431. Automatic-lathe details. RATBY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. May 8, 1958 [May 15, 1957], No. 15413/57. Class 83 (3). An automatic-lathe or like machine-tool for working upon bar-stock fed through a collet, is equipped with a normal stop-device for determining the length of stock required for a workpiece and has an auxiliary stop device for determining the waste length-of-stock to be cut from a new stock-bar for trimming. The auxiliary stop blade 2a, Figs. 5 and 6, may be mounted through a carrier 3 clamped to the usual stock-stop-pivot 7, the latter stop 1 extending in a position beyond the auxiliary stop. This stop is pivoted at 10 on the carrier, and the end opposite the stop-face is located in a pocket formed in a block 16, Fig. 6, secured to the carrier. The stop-end is biased towards the lathe &c., collet C by a spring 11 at the pivot, and a torsion spring 14a tends to turn the auxiliary stop towards the work-axis. Operation.-When the remnant of stock-bar which is too short for a workpiece and, therefore, does not reach the normal stop, is pushed out of the collet by a new stock-bar, the auxiliary stop 2a, which at this time is pressed towards the collet-axis by torsion spring 14a, is released to take up a position in front of the new stock-bar. The latter is pushed against the auxiliary stop and compresses bias-spring 11 until this stop bears against its abutment surface formed by the flat side of carrier 3 adjacent the collet. The stock-bar is now in a position to have a short end cut-off by the normal parting-tool, to thus trim the end of the new bar ready for a new set of workpieces to be produced. The auxiliary stop is moved away prior to this by the normal movement of the main stock-stop 1 and support-rod 7. Modifications.-In an arrangement where the usual radially-moved stock-stop is replaced by, say, a turret-stop 26, Fig. 9, the auxiliary stop 18 is supported in a carrier 19 secured to the machine headstock. Springs 24, 21, effect the transverse and axial-bias, respectively, of the stop, and face 19a of the carrier is used as the abutment surface. The stop is moved against the workpiece B at each cycle of linkage 22, 23, operated from the machine camshaft. Other variations in the fixing of the auxiliary stop are described.
