A descaling machine for wire stock comprises a body 10 on which are mounted a number of guide pulleys defining a feed path for the stock 21 to provide at least two bends in the stock in planes transverse to each other, and rotary brush elements 26, 27 and 38, 39 disposed along the feed path for transverse movement across the stock, the brush elements being fast with driving pulleys 25, 37 respectively so as to be driven directly therefrom as the stock passes through the machine. As shown the driving pulleys and brush elements are mounted on shafts 28, 32 which are at right angles to each other and are supported in bearings secured respectively to the web 12 and to the flange 13 of a body plate 11 of channel section mounted on a stand. The brush elements consist of axially projecting bristles the free ends thereof being adjustably spaced apart by a distance less than the wire diameter. Idle pulleys 33, 35 are secured to the body plate 11, the pulley 33 being in the same vertical plane as the pulley 25 and being radially adjustable. The wire 21 is fed into the machine through a guide block 36 and passes around the pulleys 33, 25, 37, between the brush elements 26, 27, around the pulley 35 and between the brush elements 38, 39. On leaving the brush elements 38, 39 the wire 21 passes over one, such as 40, of a number of pulleys mounted on a bracket 41, the wire 21 being engaged with a driving device on the machine to which it is fed after descaling.
