Abstract
789,802. Semi-conductor devices. HALOID CO. March 8, 1954 [March 17, 1953], No. 6716/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 37. A xerographic member comprises a conductive base layer upon which are provided a first insulating layer, a photoconductive layer of material having a dark resistivity of at least 1013 ohm ems., and then a second insulating layer, the resistivity of the first and second layers being at least 1013 ohm cms. The conductive base layer may consist of a metallic plate or foil, or conductive plastic, paper or glass; the photo-conductive material may consist of amorphous or vitreous selenium, sulphur, anthracene or mixtures of selenium and sulphur. The insulating layers may consist of hydrocarbon, waxes and oils, polystyrene, urea-, phenol-, melamine-formaldehyde resins, cellulose base and vinyl resins, butadiene polymers, and co-polymers from acrylic and methacrylic bases. The following particular examples are described: (i) a chromium base having a polystyrene layer 1 Á thick has evaporated upon it a 20 Á thick layer of Se; this is covered with a thin coating of a carbon pigmented rosin-modified phenol-formaldehyde resin by a ball rolling process. (ii) An aluminium plate has an oxide layer formed upon it to form the first insulating layer, which is coated with selenium; the selenium surface is then polished with a montan wax. (iii) A brass plate is polished with paraffin wax to form an extremely thin layer which is covered with a 50 Á thick layer of selenium and then a silicone wax base polish. (iv) A stainless steel plate is covered with a thin film ( 1/2 Á) of polymethyl methacrylate in ethylene-dichloride solution, and then a layer of selenium 40 Á thick; a final layer of paraffin in iso-octane is added. As an alternative, the final insulating layer may be provided by oxidizing the selenium surface to form selenium dioxide, and the first insulating layer may also consist of a sulphide or oxide of the metallic base.
