Abstract
1,029,199. Electrophotographic plates. RANK XEROX Ltd. Sept. 20, 1963 [Oct. 1, 1962], No. 37065/63. Heading H1K. A xerographic plate comprises a fine pattern of areas with different rates of dark decay. As shown, a conductive substrate 12, for example of stainless steel, copper, brass, abraded, cleaned or chromated aluminium, or conductive glass, plastic or paper, is covered with a pattern 13 of insulating material. for example of aluminium oxide, copper oxide, oxidized brass, polystyrene, or organic. photo-resist or acid resist materials. A layer 14 of a photoconductive insulator, for example cadmium sulphide, or selenium, is deposited on the plate by vacuum evaporation or casting. The insulating pattern 13 may be produced by oxidizing and then engraving or etching the surface of an aluminium plate, or by mixing polystyrene with a solvent and printing the pattern on to the substrate. The pattern 13 may be very thin so that tunnelling occurs on exposure to radiation to allow the discharge of the exposed areas of the photoconductive insulator 14. Alternatively the pattern 13 may be thick so that it acts as an insulator on exposure to radiation, the adjacent non-insulated areas allowing the discharge of exposed areas. The plate is charged, exposed and developed as usual except that a time delay is provided somewhere between charging and development to allow the parts of the plate with a high rate of dark decay to discharge the photoconductive insulating layer in a fine pattern so that on exposure any large areas of charge are broken up thus improving the reproduction of continuous tone originals. The insulating pattern 13 may be in the form of dots of regular or irregular shape, strips, or a continuous layer punched with holes.
