Abstract
1,201,819. Electrostatic printing; printing plates. RANK XEROX Ltd. 4 Oct., 1967 [10 Oct., 1966], No. 45220/67. Heading B6C. [Also in Divisions G2-G3] A process of producing a gravure printing plate 1 comprises forming an electrostatic latent image on a photo-conductive plate 3, developing the latent image with electroscopic developer particles so as to imagewisc fill cellular areas 16 and firing the particles. The plate 1 has a conductive metal substrate 2 which may be of aluminium brass, steel, copper, nickel, zinc, conductive rubber or conductive glass. The gravure pattern may be formed by impressing the plate 3 with a relief or embossed plate having a dot pattern, or by using a photoconductive material with a photo-hardenable polymeric composition which permits the washing away of unexposed areas of the photopolymer. Examples of photo-hardenable materials are polyvinyl alcohol, cinnamate esters of cellulose bichromated shellac, phenolic resins and nylon. Alternatively the plate 3 may be formed from a photo-conductive enamel plate as described in Specification 1,186,737, by etching using a stylus or by vacuum coating. The plate 3 is charged and exposed in known manner and then developed with a resinous toner, e.g., styrene polymers or phenol formaldehyde using a magnetic carrier. Liquid developers comprising finely divided opaque powder and an insulating liquid. The opaque powder may be carbon black, talcum powder, vinyl resins, e.g., carboxy vinyl polymers, polyvinyl pyrrolidones, methylvinylether-maleic anhydride copolymers, polyvinyl alcohols, sodium carboxyethylcellulose, hydroxy propylmethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, alkali soluble proteins casein, gelatine such as ammonium polyacrylate and sodium polyacrylate may be included in the developer. In a second embodiment, Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown) a resinous material (17) is applied to the plate (3) to occupy those spaces not occupied with toner (14). The toner is then removed e.g. by a solvent without disturbing the material (17). Printing ink (18) is then supplied from a source (19) to fill the cells (21) vacated by the toner, excess ink being removed by a squeegee blade (22).
