Abstract

755,683. Photo-electric devices. HALOID CO. May 20, 1954 [May 29, 1953], No. 14809/54. Class 37. [Also in Group XX] A xerographic photo-electric sensitive element comprises a conductive backing member having a layer of vitreous selenium, sulphur or anthracene upon which is a thin layer of vitreous selenium and tellurium. The backing member may be a plate, cylinder, sheet or web and may consist of aluminium, brass, magnesium, iron, steel, chromium, conductive glass, resins or plastics, or metallized paper or plastics. The selenium and selenium-tellurium layers may be applied by evaporation, melting, pressing or painting. The selenium-tellurium layer may comprise between 2 and 45 per cent by weight of tellurium, and is preferably not more than half the thickness of the selenium layer. In operation, the element is electrically charged, so that a charge pattern is produced when a light image is focused on the selenium-tellurium layer. The latter improves the sensitivity and frequency response of the element.
