Abstract

1,264,082. Electrophotographic materials. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 11 June, 1970 [21 Aug., 1969], No. 28246/70. Heading H1K. Residual solvent is removed from a normally dried heat-softenable photoconductive insulating layer by heating the layer briefly at a temperature above its softening point. This requires a temperature of from 45-70‹ C. above the softening point and a time of less than 1 minute, preferably in the range 1-10 seconds. Heating may be effected by IR radiation or, with layers formed on conductive backings, by bringing the backing into contact with a heated platen or roller. The layers may consist of organic photoconductors with or without resin binders or of resin-bound inorganic photoconductors and may contain usual additives. In specific examples layers are formed on aluminized polyester sheet and in one case consists of a 1 : 1 mole ratio mixture of poly-N-vinyl carbazole and 2 : 4 : 7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (coated from THF) and in another consists of a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and 41 mole per cent of N-vinyl-carbazole mixed with 1À5 parts wt. of 2 : 4 : 7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (coated from a 1 : 1 v./v. mixture of methylenechloride and tetrachloroethane).
