In a yarn winding machine having a driven drum g which rotates the winding package f carried in a pivotally-mounted cradle a and furnished with a brake s, t, brought into contact with the cheese when knock-off occurs, the cradle a also withdrawing the cheese f from contact with the drum g, the cradle a beyond its pivot point b in the main lever c supported normally by detector mechanism 2, 3, 4, has an extension h to which a chain i carrying a weight j is secured, the chain i passing over a part m on a lever n which turns about the fulcrum b so that the weight j hangs from the part m, a stop u being provided to limit the movement of the lever n towards the cradle extension h, the weight during normal winding holding the cheese f against the drum g and, at knock-off, drawing the cradle a downwards and effecting the movement of the brake s, t, against the cheese.
