730,844. Electric pens. KUHLMANN, F. Aug. 20, 1953 [Aug. 20, 1952], No. 23007/53. Class 146(3). A pen for marking electrically conducting surfaces is of the kind in which a marking stylus acts as an electrode to burn characters into a workpiece attached to a coacting electrode, the electrodes being fed with alternating current. As shown, a stylus 1 is clamped in a mounting 2 carrying sleeves 3 and 4 of heat insulating material. Tubes 5 and 6, mounted on these sleeves, are guided in a guide tube 8 by means of balls 9 mounted in a tubular cage 10. The balls 9 allow the stylus 1 to be moved away from the workpiece, not shown, on encountering an inclined or curved surface. A spring 7 presses the sleeve 4 forwardly of the tube 8. Rollers may be used in place of the balls 9, while to increase the cooling of the guide tube 8, air holes may be provided at its front and rear ends to permit air circulation. The pen may be used with a pantograph.
