Abstract

729,463. Soldering. PEARCE, H., and HARRISON, D. June 15, 1953 [June 16, 1952], No. 15169/52. Class 83 (4). In a soldering tool comprising a non-fusible electrode and a solder rod &c. as the other electrode, with means for feeding the solder towards the first electrode so that with both electrodes in contact with the work current flows between them and the solder fuses, an additional non-fusible electrode connected to the same supply pole as the solder is provided with means for bringing this electrode into co-operating relation with the first electrode in place of the solder to effect unsoldering. In one embodiment a solder feed device 9 comprising a channel-shaped pressing 12 with a reel 10 of solder wire 11 between the flanges of the channel is held between two mouldings 1a, 1b (the latter being not shown) which form the handle. A bridge piece 17 is soldered between the flanges and provides a short guide tube 17a and a guide groove 17b for the wire 11. A finger piece 16 is secured to a strip 18 of springy metal which is slidable between the base of the channel 12 and a spring 19. When the piece 16 is pressed forwardly and downwardly against a return spring 24 the end of the strip 18 engages the wire 11 and feeds it forward. A metal tube 27 connected to one side of the supply is held between the handle mouldings and supports a carbon electrode 30 at its forward end. Mounted on an insulating sleeve 34 within the tube 27 is a metal guide tube 35 connected to the other side of the supply, through which the wire 11 is fed from the reel to pass through a glass tube 32 within the electrode 30. An additional electrode 38, a stainless steel rod, is supported by a ring 37 slidable along a slot in the tube 27. The electrode 38 is electrically connected to the guide 35 by a clip 41. With the electrode 38 withdrawn the wire 11 may be fed out of the electrode 30 and when the wire is withdrawn by manually rotating the spool 10 the ring 37 may be slid forward to project the electrode 38 out of the electrode 30. According to the Provisional Specification a tool may have the carbon electrode pivoted. Specification 693,832 is referred to therein.
