Electric and like pens and pencils.-In an electric engraving pen or pencil of the type comprising a marking-member of low resistance included in an electric circuit with the article to be engraved, the marking-member consists of a pointed rod 18 made wholly of a heat refractory material having a low specific resistance such as molybdenum or tungsten. A heat-protecting shield for the operator's hand may be provided, and the device may be air or water cooled. Fig. 1 shows the rod 18 fixed in a copper tube 14 provided with heat radiating discs 15, a copper conducting rod also fixed in the tube 4 being secured to a holder 11 by means of a ring 13 and ferrule 13<1>. The holder 11 and ring 13 are of insulating material; incidentally, the ring 13 forms a shield for the operator's hand. The copper rod is connected by a lead 20 to one low voltage terminal of a transformer 21, the other being connected to a plate 23 laid under the article 24 to be engraved. Fig. 3 shows a modification having copper inlet and outlet pipes 27, 28 for a cooling- liquid, these pipes being connected to the lead 20 and acting as conductors. The rod 18 is fixed in a cooling-chamber 25 secured to the holder 11.
