[Class 83 (iv).] In an electrically heated soldering iron of the kind in which solder wire is frictionally fed by the hand of the operator through the handle, the bit consists of an electrically heated block arranged at an angle to the handle to which it is connected by a solder protecting tube, and provided with a fusion chamber and small duct. The hollow bit 5 is connected to an ebonite handle 1 by a tube 3 provided with a lining 4 of heat insulating material such as asbestos or mica. Slots 19, 22 are provided to receive respectively a knurled roller 18, and a spring-pressed roller 21 or a spring alone so that the solder wire 17 may be fed through the tube on rotating the roller 18 by the thumb. The roller 18 may be disposed in the longitudinal plane of the bore or at an angle thereto. The bit may be heated electrically by resistances 8 secured by plates 9 to two sides of the bit. The resistances are connected in parallel by wires passing through tubes 15, 16 located on opposite sides of the tube, the wires being connected to conductors 12, 12a passing through the handle and connected to the terminals 11, 11a of the leads 10, 10a. A spool of solder wire may be mounted in a carrier secured to the rear end of the handle.
