Abstract
656,766. Soldering-irons. HERSEE, L. R. Dec. 13, 1948, No. 32219. [Class 83 (iv)] In a soldering-iron having a solder supply reel, a manually operated mechanism for feeding solder from the reel and a tube or duct arranged internally of the iron and bit for guiding the solder to the working force of the bit, the bit comprises an inverted, channel-shaped member within which the tube or duct is mounted out of direct heat conducting contact therewith, at least until immediately adjacent the working face thereof, to maintain the solder solid until reaching the working face. The bit 11, Fig. 1, comprises sides 14 and a top 15 which is bent at 16 to form a working face 17 while a trap 18 is formed at the lower open side of the bit 11. An extension 13 houses a heating element 12 and a layer 20 of mica &c. is located at least below the element 12 to heat insulate the axially extending feed tube 21, mounted on porcelain &c. rings 22, therefrom. The tube 21 extends almost to the face 17 opposite a hole made therein, so that as solder emerges from the tube 21 it becomes molten and forms a blob on the face 17, excess collecting in the trap 18. The bit 11 and extension 13 may be made of copper. In a modification a semicylindrical bit is provided with a heating- element of similar shape and a feed tube mounted on porcelain &c. rings extends within the bit to a point adjacent a hole formed in the working face, a semi-circular plate secured in one end of the bit. The working face may be rounded or conical. Heating of the bits may be by gas or chemicals. The Provisional Specification describes a solder feed device, the use of an internal bore in the bit and an externally mounted feed tube.
