[Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XI] In an electric soldering-iron of the kind wherein a resistance heated bit is carried by one end of a tube formed or connected at its other end to a handle and solder is fed by manually operated mechanism through a duct in the bit, the solder is fed by trigger-actuated ratchet - and - pawl mechanism engaging the solder between the bit and a reel mounted on the tool which is in the form of a pistol or gun. A perforated bit 14 is placed in the end of a steel tube 10, the other end of which is enclosed in a heat-insulating tube 12 on which a handle 20, preferably of aluminium, containing the feed mechanism is secured by a clamp 18. The handle is made in two longitudinally divided parts secured together by screws. The bit has a bar 26 on each side of which are clamped resistance heating elements 22, 23 coiled on flat mica, asbestos, &c. strips and separated by electric insulation from the tube. Insulated lead wires 32, 33 are carried through a heatinsulating plug 34 to an ebonite &c. block 74 within the handle, a switch 82 being provided. Through the plug 34 also passes a tube 36 of refractory material such as asbestos on which a recess in the bit is shrunk. In the handle is fixed a block 56 having a duct 58 for the passage of solder wire 50, which may be flux cored, and with recesses to receive a serrated feed roll 64 co-operating with a roll 69 or with the side wall of the duct 58 and also with a ratchet wheel 65. The ratchet wheel is operated by a spring-controlled trigger 70 and spring pawl. The solder is carried by a reel 48 mounted on a pivot 51 carried by a cover plate 52, which is pivoted at 55 so as to facilitate loading. The tube 10 is provided with ventilation holes 84.
