Abstract
542,681. Electrically-heated irons. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 9, 1940, No. 14029. Convention date, Sept. 9, 1939. [Class 39 (iii)] An electrically-heated flat-iron is provided with a sole plate 10 of glass having on its upper side a continuous groove to contain a coiled resistance heater 13. The groove is covered by sheets 14 of mica, 15 of heat-reflecting aluminium, 16 of asbestos with or without a covering of aluminium foil, and 17 of stainless steel. The ends of the heater wire pass through insulators 18 to flexible strips 19 carried by an insulating plate 22 secured to a metal plate 20 which may have lugs 21 welded to the plate 17. The plates 17, 20 with their associated parts are rigidly secured to the glass plate 10 by means of a screw 24 passing through a stainless steel plate 25 which closes a large aperture in the plate 10, the screw engaging a nut 29 integral with the plate 20. A cover 31 is secured by a screw 32 threaded into the upper end of the screw 24. The cover may be of stainless steel lined internally with. asbestos and aluminium foil. A tubular handle 33 is secured by a tongue 35 engaging a socket 36, and at the forward end by a spring catch 37 with finger piece 40. The terminals 42 of the supply leads 41 are mounted in an insulating block 44, and are engaged by pins 47 projecting upward from the flexible strips 19, when the handle is placed in position. The glass sole-plate enables the iron to be used as soon as it is energized, due to short-wave radiation which is radiated through the glass to the work.
