Electric hand-irons comprise a base plate 1 and body 2 having a U-shaped groove 10 to accommodate a heating unit comprising a metal tube 11 containing an electric insulating material 13, preferably magnesium oxide, and a resistance 12. The two parts of the iron are clamped together, the face of the tube contacting with the base plate being somewhat flattened in the process.
