463,162. Soldering - irons. WOOD, C. E., and HARPER, T. Nov. 14, 1935, No. 20037 /36. Divided out of 463,141. [Class 83 (iv)] In a soldering-iron of the kind which is provided with mechanical means for feeding to the bit a solder rod or stick, which is completely consumed in use, the bit contains a channel or passage comprising a portion of narrow non-circular cross-section defined as a slot for permitting molten solder to flow from the inoperative to the operative surface thereof. The slot may consist of a saw cut 12 or of a closed channel which may be circular over part of its length and narrow and non- circular along a further part. In another form separate members 16, 17 may be secured by screws 18, 19 to the body 20, leaving a channel 15. In a further form a separate stepped member may be screwed to the side of the stepped end of the bit so as to leave a channel therebetween. In another form the upper and lower surfaces of the bit may be provided with grooves connected at the tip. The iron may be combined with a solder feeding device as described in Specification 463,141. According to the Provisional Specification the bit may be provided with a hole drilled through the tip.
