Abstract

718,370. Electric soldering irons. WOTTON, C. S. R. May 14, 1952, [May 25, 1951.] No. 12370/51. Class 39 (3). A soldering iron, e.g. of small size for delicate work, comprises a hollow handle 4, a metal tube 1 partly located in the handle 4 and projecting therefrom and carrying at its free end a soldering bit 19, an electrical heater winding 8 located in the tube 1 near the bit 19, the winding 8 being connected to the tube 1 and to an insulated conductor 10 in the tube 1, and being in a fibre glass sleeve 9 in the tube 1 which extends up to or near the free end of the tube 1, and the bit 19 comprising a removable hollow cap having a peripheral skirt which extends substantially over the length of the winding 8. The tube 1 is fixed in a second metal tube 2 having a semi-cylindrical part 3. A bush 20 holds the tube 2 firmly against a shoulder 5 in the handle 4 and the conductor 10 is taken through a hole in a panel 13 which is secured by a wire 12 to the part 3 of the tube 2, the conductor 10 being then connected to a lead 14. The other lead 16 is fastened to the wire 2 to complete the circuit through the tubes 1 and 2. Two or more intertwined heating coils may be used, a switch enabling one alone to be used, or the two brought in in parallel.
