Abstract

556,609. Electric soldering irons. ROCHMANN, A. I. March 7, 1942, No. 3021. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] The body 1 of an electric soldering iron is fitted at one end into a wooden or plastic material handle made in two parts separated longitudinally and set at an angle to the axis of the body, the other end fitting over the shank 7 of the bit 6. The heater 20 extends partly into a recess in the bit and is connected to terminals 9 in the handle, carried by an insulating disc 11. An earth wire is connected to a screw 4. The heater comprises resistance wire 13 wound on a mica strip 14 and coated with heat-resisting paint 14a. The core is folded on itself and encloses mica strips 18 and is covered by similar strips 19, the whole being enclosed in a mica sheet for insertion in the bit. The handle may be pivoted so that it may be set at any angle to, or in line with, the body 1. A small lamp may be mounted on the body, near the bit, and a pilot light and thermostat may be provided.
