Abstract
564,388. Electric soldering irons. ROCHMANN, A. I. Jan. 9, 1943, No. 461. [Class 39 (iii)] A copper bit holder contains the forward end of a flat heating coil 19 folded midway of its length and tapped at this point to a terminal 13. An insulating strip 26 lies outside the folded element, and strips 23, 24 within the fold. The tube 1 enclosing the heating coil carries a two-part insulating handle 6 enclosing a terminal block 10 carrying three terminals 11, 12, 13, and a spring switch blade 15 controlled by the user by means of which one half of the heating resistance may be shortcircuited to secure more rapid heating. The handle also contains a mercury switch 28 which is adapted to cut off the current when the iron is laid on its side. An alternative form of heating resistance comprises a steatite tube with separate cavities for the coiled resistance. The tube may be split to provide an air gap between those parts of the resistance having a high voltage drop, and the gap may be filled with mica. The shunt wire may pass through a third cavity. Specification 556,609 is referred to.
