Abstract
546,947. Electric soldering irons. SHARPLES, J. T., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 5, 1941, No. 5834. [Class 39 (iii)] A soldering bit 1a with a renewable tip 1b contains a heater consisting of a helical wire 4 embedded in magnesium oxide or quartz sand in a metal sheath 5. The upper end of the heater wire is silver-soldered to the sheath at 7 and the lower end is connected with a metal terminal 8 extending through an insulation nipple 9 which closes the sheath. The lower end of the sheath fits into a shank 2 carried by a handle 3 and containing the insulated connecting wire 20. A terminal connector 18 is provided to receive wires 19, 20 from the heater, and 16, 17 from the supply. The shank 2 may be provided with cooling fins or may be of helical form and may be extended to form the handle. The heater is suitable for connection to a supply at 9-12 volts.
